Sunshine Arts began as a modest mat cutting business started by Jim Franklin out of his apartment in Waikīkī in 1996 with his last $20.00, a used mat cutter, and a borrowed $100.00.

He began by visiting the artists at the zoo fence in Waikīkī and offering to cut mats for them. He also called all the photographers in the phone book and picked up a few customers there.

A year later Jim was offered a commercial location in a vacated building on the Windward side of Oʻahu which was run down and out of the way but the rent was cheap so he took a chance and moved in. The building was located on the only road following the coast on the eastern side of the island so therefore, if you take a drive around the island you will have to drive by Sunshine Arts!

After several years of matting and making picture frames for the art community, the artists would leave a few pieces and eventually the gallery filled up with hundreds of art works. Word got out and artists from the other islands would send work to Jim and his sales manager, Laetitia Atlantis.

Today Sunshine Arts has the largest collection of local art in Hawai'i. With over 100 artists, there is much to see and choose from. There is also a huge selection of picture frame mouldings and mat colors all in stock so your frame can be made in as little as one day or even on the spot!
