Susie Anderson's luminous oil paintings capture, in her own impressionistic style, the beauty of Hawai'i that many take for granted. When someone looks at her work she hopes they will say to themselves "I wish I had been there!" She is passionate about painting "en plein-air" (literally in the fresh air), and she is the most drawn to subjects with high drama, mood and color.
Susie has won many honors for her work including four "Best of Show" awards. She was juried into the prestigious "Artist of Hawai'i" show at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts. Her paintings are displayed in private and public collections worldwide, in addition to the permanent collections of the State of Hawai'i and the City and County of Honolulu.
Arriving in Honolulu from California in 1969 with degrees in medical illustration and graphic design, Susie helped build a media center at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. It was during this period that she began oil painting, gaining a solid foundation from notable island artists Gloria Foss and Lau Chin. Susie's love for "plein air" painting has been cultivated and refined since then by workshops from nationally renowned artists Kevin Macpherson, Charles Sovek and Ted Goershner. Now, always on the lookout for inspiring painting locations, you might find her at sunrise or sunset, armed with paints and a French easel, interpreting Hawaii's remarkable light on canvas.
