The Japanese art of Gyotaku ... most simply translated as "gyo" -- fish, and "taku" -- rubbing or impression: a technique developed to accurately record a fisherman's prized catch (and ultimately a fisherman's story along with it), prior to eating it.
Brandon Tengan was raised in Kane'ohe. Brandon's overall love for the ocean first began with surfing. "But then I slowly began to dive and fish, mainly when the surf got flat. And once I started ... I got hooked," admits this ocean enthusiast. Raised in a family of non-fisherman, Brandon was blessed and fortunate to have been taught by many skilled fishing friends and dive partners. Initially taught Gyotaku by a family friend (as well as through watching demonstrations), what once began as a small backyard hobby is now a fun business endeavor. A fan of both the traditional (simple black and white) and modern (retouched in color) styles of Gyotaku, Brandon incorporates the two approaches separately, applying them differently depending on the catch.
